White House: Russia, Ukraine Not Ready for Peace Talks

(Washington, D.C.) – The White House has stated that Russia and Ukraine are currently not prepared for negotiations regarding the ongoing conflict, and emphasized that sanctions imposed on Russia are not intended to be a bargaining chip when talks eventually take place.

In an interview on January 10, 2025, White House advisor John Kirby highlighted that neither side is ready for negotiations at this time. He also noted that the sanctions imposed against Russia were never meant to serve as leverage in future discussions. Kirby’s comments, reported by Ukrinform, clarify the administration’s stance on the issue.

“There’s no expectation right now that either side is ready to negotiate,” Kirby said. He also explained that the imposition of sanctions was based on assessments of both the external and internal markets, particularly in the energy sector.

Further elaborating on the strategy behind sanctions, Kirby confirmed that large-scale restrictions had previously been postponed to prevent an increase in energy prices in the United States. This decision underscores the delicate balancing act being managed by the U.S. administration as it navigates the complex global energy landscape.

On January 10, the United States imposed sanctions on over 30 Russian oil service companies, further tightening economic pressures on Moscow. In addition, sanctions were applied to a Serbian company linked to Gazprom Neft, a major player in the Russian energy sector. The U.S. State Department also imposed sanctions on Aleksey Likhachev, CEO of the Russian state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, as well as members of the company’s board.

The United Kingdom, in a coordinated move, also introduced new sanctions targeting Russia, intensifying the pressure on Moscow in response to its ongoing actions in Ukraine.
