Ukraine Builds Strong Defenses on Kursk Border, Says Demchenko

As of August 22, 2024, Ukraine remains resolute in its efforts to fortify its defenses along the border with Russia’s Kursk region, situated opposite the Sumy region. Andriy Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service, provided updates during a telethon, affirming that the Ukrainian government continues to enhance its border security measures. Despite Russia’s persistent aggression, Demchenko assured that the State Border Guard Service is fully engaged in safeguarding the border and reinforcing defensive positions.

In his remarks, Demchenko stated, “No one has removed the tasks of the State Border Guard Service and our units, which are to protect and defend the border. We are continuing to take measures to strengthen our border, because we need to be prepared for any eventualities as Russia remains an aggressor.” His comments underscore Ukraine’s commitment to maintaining strong defense positions, given the ongoing threat posed by Russia.

The focus on border security comes as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported ongoing military operations in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have made significant advances. On August 21, Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukrainian troops are currently controlling specific areas within the Kursk region. Furthermore, Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky confirmed that the Ukrainian military controls approximately 1,263 square kilometers in the Kursk region, including 93 settlements.

The State Border Guard Service’s efforts to bolster defenses are part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to fortify its position and prevent any potential illegal activities at the border. This move reflects Ukraine’s determination to protect its territory and reinforce its defenses amidst continued tensions with Russia.
