Russia Protests Italian TV Report on Kursk Region

Russia summoned Italy’s ambassador to Moscow on August 16, 2024, to address a report by Italian broadcaster RAI. The report covered a part of the Kursk region that Ukrainian troops reportedly captured. The Russian foreign ministry issued a strong protest, accusing the Italian team of illegal activities.

According to the foreign ministry, the RAI team entered Russia unlawfully to report on what Russia describes as a “criminal terrorist attack” by Ukrainian soldiers. The ministry’s statement warned that the actions of the Italian journalists are considered a violation of Russia’s Criminal Code.

The Russian authorities are investigating the incident to determine the legal implications and decide on appropriate actions. The Italian broadcast showed journalists traveling into Russia with Ukrainian military accompaniment. They were seen driving an armored vehicle past Russian road signs and reaching the town of Sudzha, which is approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the border.

Ukraine has claimed control of Sudzha, adding to the tensions surrounding the report.
