Russian authorities have announced plans to relocate residents displaced from the Kursk region to parts of occupied eastern Ukraine. The move comes as fighting continues in the area.
Acting Kursk Governor Alexei Smirnov stated that he is working with Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-appointed leader of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, to provide temporary housing for the evacuees. These temporary accommodations will be located in resorts and health spas near the Azov Sea.
Smirnov mentioned that the first groups of evacuees will soon be moved to these temporary shelters in the Zaporizhzhia region. This region, along with Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk, was annexed by Russia after contentious referendums in September 2022. Despite the annexation, Russian forces do not have full control over all the claimed territories.
Kursk is about 550 kilometers (341 miles) north of Berdyansk and Kyrylivka in the Zaporizhzhia region, where Smirnov indicated that Balitsky had offered to accommodate the evacuees.
Since Ukrainian troops advanced into the Kursk region last Tuesday, more than 120,000 people have been evacuated. Smirnov has been actively sharing messages of support from leaders of other Russian regions to bolster morale.
According to Vyorstka, an investigative news outlet, the Kremlin has instructed regional governors to publicly emphasize their efforts to provide humanitarian aid and accommodate evacuees from Kursk.
