A Russian soldier has released video footage showing the aftermath of a HIMARS strike on Russian helicopters in the Belgorod region. The footage, shared by the Dosye Shpiona Telegram channel, reveals significant damage caused by an M30A2 rocket to Mi-28 and Mi-8 helicopters, both of which were armed and refuelled at the time of the attack.
The video shows fuel leaking from punctured tanks, with visible puddles under the helicopters. The Mi-28NM helicopter, marked “Red 96,” suffered multiple impacts from tungsten pellets, causing damage to the fuselage, hydraulic systems, and fuel tank. However, some parts remained intact due to the aircraft’s internal armour, including protection for the pilot and weapon systems operator. The engine was also spared from damage, thanks to additional steel plates shielding it.
The Mi-8MTV-5-1 helicopter, marked “Red 54,” sustained much more serious damage. The missile struck the rear of the aircraft, tearing off the door to the cargo compartment. The entire helicopter suffered extensive punctures in its fuel tank and casing, particularly in areas lacking armour. Given the extent of the destruction, the Mi-8 is unlikely to be repaired, and its surviving components will likely be used for spare parts. The Mi-28, while damaged, appears salvageable.
The strike occurred on 24 March 2025, when the HIMARS rocket system successfully targeted Russian helicopters in the Belgorod region. Initial reports identified the destroyed aircraft as two Ka-52 attack helicopters and two Mi-8 transport helicopters. However, the new video suggests that instead of one of the Ka-52s, a Mi-28 was hit.
The location of the strike, approximately 60 km from the Ukrainian border near the village of Ivnya, was identified by Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. After confirming the presence of the helicopters, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine passed the coordinates to a HIMARS unit, which carried out the strike with precision.
