Ukrainian defence technology developers have tested a new drone armed with a shotgun, demonstrating an innovative approach to countering Russian forces. The Sky Defenders company released footage of the test flight on its official TikTok page, showing the drone in operation.
The drone follows a standard fixed-wing design and is launched from the ground. Its nose is fitted with a shotgun, aimed using an attached sight. A rotating digital camera is mounted on top of the drone, providing real-time targeting capabilities. The company states that the camera system is similar to the one used on the ZigZag interceptor drone. To ensure high speed and stability, engines are installed on each wing.
Ukrainian forces have already deployed weaponised drones in combat, using them to target Russian positions and intercept enemy reconnaissance UAVs. A notable example is the 30th Mechanized Brigade, which modified a quadcopter drone to carry a double-barrelled shotgun, allowing it to shoot down Russian drones. As of January 15, 2025, this system has reportedly destroyed at least 20 enemy UAVs.
Beyond air-to-air engagements, drone-mounted shotguns are also being tested for ground attacks, using ammunition designed for effective area damage. Ukrainian forces have previously equipped drones with automatic rifles, including the AK-74. The “Queen of Hornets” drone, armed with an AK-74, has been deployed to engage Russian infantry. Units from the BULAVA group have experimented with mounting a Bullspike anti-tank launcher on the same platform, further expanding Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities.
Ukrainian forces continue to refine these weaponised drone systems, combining small arms and heavier weaponry on various UAV platforms. Recent developments include footage of a DJI Agras T30 drone equipped with a 7.62 mm PKM machine gun and an anti-tank launcher. These advancements highlight Ukraine’s growing expertise in drone warfare, using innovative solutions to counter Russian aggression.
