Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on six Russian regions overnight, targeting key military and strategic sites. The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 126 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles. This marks one of the largest drone assaults on Russian territory since the start of Moscow’s full scale invasion of Ukraine.
According to reports, the attack primarily focused on the Volgograd, Voronezh, and Belgorod regions, where 64, 38, and 14 drones were shot down, respectively. Additional strikes targeted Bryansk, Rostov, and Kursk, with seven, two, and one drones intercepted in those areas. The previous day, Russia claimed to have destroyed 28 Ukrainian drones, including 15 over Bryansk, five over Belgorod, and four over the Moscow region. Ukrainian drones were also shot down over Saratov, Kaluga, and the Black Sea.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on drones to strike military facilities and infrastructure inside Russia, seeking to disrupt logistics and weaken Moscow’s war effort. While Russia insists its air defences successfully counter these threats, the growing frequency and scale of Ukrainian drone operations suggest otherwise. These attacks have forced Russia to divert more resources towards air defence, stretching its capabilities.
Moscow has continuously accused Ukraine of targeting border regions with drones and missiles, claiming that such strikes have intensified since the start of the war. However, Kyiv has not officially confirmed responsibility for these attacks, although it has previously acknowledged striking military and logistical targets inside Russia.
Russia’s air defence network, while extensive, is increasingly under pressure from these relentless Ukrainian strikes. The latest assault highlights Ukraine’s ability to penetrate deep into Russian airspace and challenge Moscow’s claims of total air superiority.
