Tatyana Moskalkova, Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner, has praised the Ukrainian Armed Forces for their humanitarian actions in the Kursk region. In a speech delivered to the Russian State Duma on January 30, Moskalkova revealed that Ukrainian soldiers had shared their food with civilians in the Kursk region, which has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict.

Moskalkova explained that she had been in contact with several residents of the Kursk region, who were allegedly moved to Ukraine before being returned to Russia via Belarus. According to their accounts, Ukrainian soldiers took them to the Ukrainian city of Sumy, and along the way, they provided food and shared their rations with the civilians, showing kindness despite the difficult circumstances.

“People were telling different stories,” Moskalkova remarked, indicating that the residents of Kursk had varying accounts of their experience. Nevertheless, she noted that the Ukrainian military’s actions, especially in terms of sharing resources, demonstrated a level of humanity that should not be ignored.

Moskalkova made a call for Russians not to view Ukrainians solely as enemies or as part of an “evil empire.” She stated that Ukraine should not be dehumanised, as the people involved in the conflict were not all the same, and their actions should be seen in a broader context.

These remarks come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to maintain a “buffer zone” in the Kursk region, which aims to protect Ukrainian cities like Sumy and Kharkiv from potential Russian military offensives.
