North Korean soldiers were reportedly unaware they would be involved in the war against Ukraine, believing they were merely participating in combat training, according to the South Korean ambassador to the UN.
South Korea’s Ambassador to the UN, Hwang Jun-kook, revealed that North Korean soldiers deployed to assist Russian forces in Ukraine were under the false impression that they were being sent for combat training rather than participating in the war. This revelation sheds light on the disarray surrounding the deployment of North Korean troops in Russia.
According to the ambassador, two North Korean soldiers who were deployed to the region stated they had no idea their mission was tied to the conflict in Ukraine. Instead, they believed they were simply taking part in simulated combat exercises. The situation mirrors a confusing and perhaps misleading operation, where soldiers are unknowingly thrust into a war they never signed up for.
The presence of 12,000 North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region of Russia, as reported by the US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, further complicates the situation. These soldiers are purportedly receiving military training and technology from Russia, which, in turn, is strengthening their combat capabilities. However, both Russia and North Korea continue to deny the true nature of the deployment, claiming their military cooperation is entirely in line with international law—something that raises eyebrows, given the illegal nature of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Despite these denials, the reality is that North Korean troops have found themselves deeply entangled in a war they were not fully informed about. Their deployment highlights the often murky and manipulative tactics used by Russia and its allies to further their geopolitical agenda. Whether these soldiers are being used as pawns in a larger game of warfare or whether they were truly misled remains to be seen, but what is clear is that their participation in this conflict was far from voluntary or well-informed.
