(Kyiv) – German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit to discuss further support for Ukraine and gather updates on the situation at the front. The unexpected trip underlines Germany’s commitment to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Upon arrival, Pistorius expressed Germany’s solidarity, stating that the visit was a signal of active and sustained support from Berlin. As reported by the German broadcaster Tagesschau, Pistorius told the dpa news agency that Germany, along with key NATO allies such as Poland, France, Italy, and the United States, stands firmly behind Ukraine.
During his visit, Pistorius delivered Ukraine’s first RCH 155 wheeled howitzer to the Ukrainian ambassador. The delivery marks the start of a broader plan to provide 54 howitzers, with five more expected to arrive by the end of the year. These artillery systems are seen as critical for Ukraine’s defence efforts, providing enhanced mobility and firepower.
The defence minister also addressed claims that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was blocking a €3 billion military aid package. Pistorius firmly denied these rumours, confirming that the package is in the final stages of coordination within the German government.
The visit comes just days before the inauguration of US President Donald Trump and follows discussions Pistorius had in Warsaw with his counterparts from Poland, France, and Italy. The talks focused on strengthening military assistance to Ukraine and coordinating efforts among European allies.
