Ceasefire Possible if NATO Protects Freed Ukrainian Land: Zelenskyy

(Kyiv) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed that a ceasefire could be achieved if Ukraine’s internationally recognized territories, currently under Ukrainian control, are placed “under the NATO umbrella.” This suggestion comes as NATO’s role in Ukraine’s security remains a critical topic of discussion.

In an interview with Sky News, Zelenskyy responded to speculation about a possible plan from US President-elect Donald Trump, which would involve Ukraine conceding Russian-occupied territories in exchange for NATO membership. Zelenskyy firmly rejected this idea, insisting that any NATO invitation to Ukraine must be based on its recognized borders, with no compromises on territorial integrity.

“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we must bring under the NATO umbrella the territory of Ukraine that we control,” Zelenskyy stated. He emphasized the urgency of this action, calling for quick NATO protection over the regions Ukraine currently administers. Once this is achieved, Zelenskyy suggested that Ukraine could pursue diplomatic efforts to reclaim the Russian-occupied areas.

The president warned that without NATO’s immediate protection, further territorial aggression from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin would be inevitable. “A ceasefire is needed to guarantee that Putin will not return. NATO must immediately cover the territories under Ukraine’s control, which is very much needed. Otherwise, he [Putin] will come back,” he cautioned.

Zelenskyy has consistently maintained that Ukraine will never accept Russia’s occupation of its territories as legal, and reiterated the country’s commitment to restoring its borders through diplomatic means. While acknowledging that the return of Crimea cannot be achieved through force, he underscored that it remains a diplomatic priority for Ukraine.
