Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that F-16 fighter jets successfully intercepted and destroyed seven Russian cruise missiles targeting civilian infrastructure, showcasing the jets’ effectiveness despite limited numbers.
(Kyiv) – Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed the first successful use of F-16 fighter jets in defending the nation, reporting that they intercepted and destroyed seven cruise missiles aimed at civilian infrastructure. The announcement was made during an interview with the British TV channel Sky News, according to reports by UNN.
Zelensky emphasized the significance of this development, despite Ukraine’s limited fleet of F-16s. “How do F-16s work today? Very good. For the most part, great. We have very few F-16s. What are they doing now? Destroyed seven cruise missiles two nights ago. Seven missiles that flew at infrastructure, civilian infrastructure,” he said.
This operation highlights the critical role advanced fighter jets play in Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression. The destruction of these missiles underlines the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly as civilian infrastructure continues to face threats from Russian attacks.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands has concluded its 45-year use of F-16 fighters and is transferring its remaining aircraft to Ukraine. Fourteen of the jets will be delivered to Ukraine for operational use, while 18 will be stationed in Romania to support the training of Ukrainian pilots. This marks a significant contribution to Ukraine’s defense strategy as the country enhances its ability to confront aerial threats.
