(Toretsk) – Ukrainian forces successfully thwarted a major Russian assault on high-rise buildings in Toretsk, a strategic area crucial to controlling the city on November 29, 2024. Utilizing drones, tactical ingenuity, and exceptional resilience, Ukrainian soldiers inflicted severe losses on Russian troops, forcing them into a chaotic retreat and leaving Moscow’s ambitions in the region in disarray.

In Toretsk, the fight for control of central high-rises reached a fever pitch. After losing half of these tactically significant structures, Russian forces regrouped and launched an aggressive counterattack, determined to regain the upper hand. Their strategy was clear: by capturing these high-rises, they could dominate the city’s residential zones and establish comprehensive fire control over Toretsk, paving the way for a potential takeover. However, Ukrainian forces anticipated the offensive and met it with fierce resistance.

The Russian command mobilized a significant number of infantry units to storm Ukrainian positions. Their plan relied on overwhelming Ukrainian defenders with sheer numbers and engaging them in intense close-quarters combat. This approach, however, became a double-edged sword. The dense concentration of troops made them prime targets for Ukrainian FPV drones, which inflicted heavy casualties. Drone operators from Ukraine’s Liut Brigade also outmaneuvered Russian soldiers who feigned death—a tactic frequently employed by Moscow’s forces.

Despite the devastation caused by drones, several Russian stormtroopers managed to penetrate the high-rises, leading to fierce combat at extremely close ranges. Some engagements occurred at point-blank distances, with wounded Ukrainian soldiers fighting on despite needing medical attention. In one instance, Ukrainian troops identified and eliminated a Russian soldier attempting to feign death on a rooftop.

As the battle wore on, Ukrainian forces captured radios from fallen Russian soldiers and turned them into a weapon of deception. Using the radios, they lured remaining Russian troops out of their fortified positions under the pretense of rendezvousing with friendly forces. The unsuspecting Russians were met with concentrated machine-gun fire, resulting in further losses without the need for additional close-quarters combat.

The relentless resistance exhausted Russian assault forces, forcing a retreat. Realizing their communications had been compromised and coordination between units was in shambles, the Russian command had no choice but to abandon their offensive. The operation, which took weeks of preparation, left Russian forces back at square one, with significant losses and morale severely diminished. They now face weeks of reorganization before attempting another assault on Toretsk.

Key Developments in Toretsk Battle Outcome
Russian infantry assault on high-rises Heavy casualties due to Ukrainian drone strikes
Close-quarters combat within high-rise buildings Russian forces repelled after intense fighting
Ukrainian use of captured radios Lured and eliminated remaining Russian soldiers
Russian retreat following compromised communications Offensive efforts reset, requiring reorganization

This failed operation marks yet another setback for Moscow in its broader campaign against Ukraine.
