(Kyiv) – Ukraine is exploring the possibility of using funds from frozen Russian assets to purchase Italian-made air defense systems and ammunition. This was confirmed after talks between Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Anatoliy Klochko, and a delegation from Italy’s Defense Industry Agency. The discussions are part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to strengthen its air defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Russia.
During the meeting, Klochko emphasized the importance of understanding both the cost and the delivery timeline for the air defense systems, which are seen as crucial for bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Along with air defense systems, Ukraine is also interested in acquiring various calibers of ammunition, which are essential for the effectiveness of these systems.
The discussions between the two countries have moved beyond just the purchase of equipment. Representatives from the Ukrainian Ministry of Strategic Industry and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took part in the meetings and were introduced to the range of defense products offered by Italian companies. This collaboration suggests a growing defense partnership between Ukraine and Italy, with potential for joint industrial projects that could benefit both nations.
Italy has expressed a strong willingness to support Ukraine, not only through the provision of military hardware but also by contributing to the proper allocation of the EU budget to support Ukraine’s industrial capabilities. This could include utilizing Ukraine’s defense industry in ways that complement Italy’s own defense sector.
The conversations come as part of broader efforts to bolster Ukraine’s defense systems. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte ways to further strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, including exploring models like Denmark’s for weapons procurement.
