Volunteers from 70 countries have joined Ukraine’s military forces, responding to the ongoing war with Russia. Over 400 new recruits enlist each month in Ukraine’s Defense Forces, many passing rigorous selection processes to fight on the front lines. A large portion of these volunteers hail from South America, contributing to a diverse group united against Russian aggression. Their reasons for joining range from personal motives to shared ideals, reinforcing Ukraine’s resistance efforts with experienced fighters from across the globe.

(Kyiv) – Ukraine’s military ranks are growing more international as volunteers from over 70 countries have enlisted to support its fight against Russian forces. According to Lieutenant Colonel Konstantin Milevsky, the head of foreign military coordination for Ukraine’s Defense Forces, these recruits include individuals with military and police experience, as well as newcomers motivated by various personal and professional reasons.

The Ukrainian Legion of Volunteers was established in response to Russia’s intensified military actions, offering a way for non-Ukrainians to join the resistance. This multinational unit is now a vital part of Ukraine’s defense strategy. On average, 400 to 600 foreign recruits apply to join Ukraine’s military each month, although some are disqualified during medical and physical evaluations. Currently, volunteers from 72 countries serve in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with South Americans comprising 40% of the total.

For those with recent military or law enforcement experience, the path to enlistment is straightforward, bypassing basic training and placing them directly into units. New recruits without such backgrounds undergo rigorous training to ensure readiness for the battlefield.

The motivations of foreign fighters vary widely. Some seek financial rewards or military experience, while others are driven by a personal connection to Ukraine’s struggle, the promise of citizenship, or a profound opposition to Russia’s actions. Despite these differing motivations, the foreign volunteers are said to perform at a level equal to their Ukrainian counterparts, excelling in combat tasks and sharing valuable skills.

Poland has also played a role in supporting this effort. The country’s recruitment center for the Ukrainian Legion began operations on October 1, coinciding with Ukraine’s Day of Defenders. Poland is now training a new wave of volunteers for the Ukrainian forces.
