A Ukrainian drone strike targeted the Atlas oil depot in Russia’s Rostov region, causing a major fire and damaging key infrastructure. The depot, part of Russia’s military supply chain, was hit as part of a broader drone campaign reportedly involving 50 drones across five Russian regions. Russia claims to have intercepted most of the drones but acknowledged the attack’s impact on the facility.
(Rostov) – A significant fire erupted at the Atlas oil depot in Russia’s Rostov region following a Ukrainian drone strike early on November 29. The depot, which supplies fuel to the Russian military, sustained damage as flames engulfed at least two fuel tanks, spreading across the facility. Local officials confirmed the attack, highlighting the vulnerability of strategic infrastructure amid ongoing tensions.
According to Acting Regional Head Yuri Slyusar, 30 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in the Rostov region during the night. Advisor to the Mayor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko reported that the attack caused extensive damage at the Atlas depot, igniting fuel tanks by 8:35 am. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that 50 drones targeted five Russian regions overnight, with air defenses destroying 47. These included 29 in Rostov, 8 in Krasnodar Krai, and the rest scattered across Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, and Crimea.
The Atlas depot holds significant importance within Russia’s military-industrial network, serving as a critical fuel supplier for military operations. The site, previously used for military exercises in 2020, has now been hit twice in recent months. A similar attack on August 28 caused a fire in its vertical storage tanks.
By 11:20 am, Ukraine’s Armed Forces confirmed the strike, underscoring their ongoing efforts to disrupt Russian military logistics.
Reported Drone Interceptions by Region
Region | Drones Intercepted |
---|---|
Rostov | 29 |
Krasnodar Krai | 8 |
Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh | 3 |
Crimea (Occupied) | 1 |
Despite Russia’s claim of a high interception rate, the Atlas oil depot’s damage demonstrates the limitations of its defenses against Ukraine’s evolving drone capabilities.
