Are Nuclear Weapons the Answer for Ukraine?

Following significant escalations in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, philosopher Slavoj Žižek has reignited debate on whether Ukraine should be allowed nuclear weapons for self-defense. The discussion comes in the wake of U.S. support for Ukraine’s missile strikes on Russian territory and Russia’s threats under its revised nuclear doctrine. Žižek suggests that allies have a moral obligation to equip nations like Ukraine with nuclear deterrents when attacked by a nuclear superpower, challenging traditional norms of warfare and geopolitics.

(Kyiv) – Following a series of military escalations between Ukraine and Russia, renowned philosopher Slavoj Žižek has proposed a radical solution: allowing Ukraine to possess nuclear weapons as a deterrent against aggression. His comments come amid heightened tensions after U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles were used by Ukraine to strike a Russian military facility in Bryansk Oblast, close to the Ukrainian border.

While Russia claimed the strike caused minimal damage and no casualties, its response was a stark warning. Citing its newly revised nuclear doctrine, Russia stated that such actions could justify a nuclear response. Žižek argues that this doctrine is hypocritical, as Russia insists on keeping its own territory out of the war despite being the aggressor in Ukraine.

Žižek criticized the normalization of Russia’s destruction of Ukrainian infrastructure, comparing it to Israel’s recent operations in Gaza. He called attention to the unequal standards applied to Ukraine’s defensive measures, which are often labeled as “escalations” while Russia’s aggression continues unchecked.

The philosopher also noted the broader implications of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s vision for a neo-imperial Russia, seeking influence akin to czarist times. He described Putin’s rhetoric, emphasizing sovereignty and independence, as a justification for expansionism at the expense of neighboring states.

Žižek contends that if nuclear-armed powers like Russia can use their capabilities to intimidate smaller nations, those nations must have access to similar weapons for meaningful self-defense.
