(Warsaw) – Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz has announced an ambitious plan to establish an unmanned drone army by early 2025, bolstering the country’s defenses amid regional threats from Russia and Belarus.

Poland aims to create a state-of-the-art drone force encompassing aerial, ground, surface, and underwater vehicles, with a particular focus on naval operations. The announcement was made during Polish Navy Day celebrations in Gdynia on November 28. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz highlighted the importance of adapting to rapidly evolving drone technology, stressing the need for a robust production strategy to ensure Poland remains equipped for future challenges.

This initiative aligns with other recent measures to strengthen Poland’s military capabilities. On November 18, the government signed a memorandum with manufacturers to produce nitrocellulose and gunpowder for large-caliber ammunition, signaling a commitment to enhancing domestic production of key military supplies. Additionally, Poland has invited Slovakia to join its Eastern Shield project, which aims to construct fortification infrastructure along the borders with Russia and Belarus.

Poland’s strategic location, neighboring Ukraine and Belarus, has amplified its focus on regional security, particularly in light of ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine. The government’s efforts to bolster military readiness include establishing defensive lines along its eastern borders to deter potential threats.

The Ministry of Defense is also exploring options for acquiring modern submarines under the “Orka” program, with offers already submitted by Sweden, Germany (in collaboration with Norway), France, Spain, and South Korea. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz indicated that contracts are expected to be signed next year. Meanwhile, modernization of the corvette ORP “Ślązak” is planned, enhancing its reconnaissance and combat capabilities by 2025.

Poland’s decisive steps toward military modernization underscore its commitment to regional security, reflecting a proactive response to the heightened risks posed by neighboring conflicts.
