The European Union is accelerating efforts to finalise a new aid package for Ukraine, taking into account the concerns of countries willing to cooperate. This comes as Hungary continues to block financial support for Kyiv, prompting EU officials to explore alternative solutions.
The head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, stated that there is broad political support for the initiative, but important details still need to be worked out. She highlighted the role of defence ministers in shaping the proposal and confirmed that discussions are ongoing at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
Kallas noted that the European Council has urged a swift resolution to the aid package. When asked about Hungary’s likely response, she said that the proposal already considers the participation of nations that are ready to move forward. The European Commission is expected to explore new approaches to bypass Hungary’s blockade of the package, worth approximately GBP 17 billion.
The EU is under increasing pressure to ensure continued support for Ukraine. With Hungary’s opposition, European leaders are working to secure commitments from member states willing to contribute, ensuring Kyiv receives the necessary financial and military assistance without further delays.
