The European Union Foreign Affairs Council is meeting today to discuss Ukraine and the results of negotiations held in Jeddah. Ahead of the meeting, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaya Kallas stated that Russia’s demands demonstrate that it is not genuinely seeking peace. Speaking to reporters, Kallas highlighted that Moscow’s conditions for a ceasefire align with its original war objectives, making clear that the Kremlin is not willing to negotiate a fair resolution.
Kallas welcomed the talks in Jeddah, which brought together Ukraine and its allies to discuss pathways to peace. However, she emphasised that the next move must come from Russia. “The ball is in Russia’s court,” she said, noting that the conditions set by Moscow suggest it is still focused on achieving its military ambitions rather than ending the war.
When pressed on the nature of Russia’s ceasefire conditions, Kallas explained that they include demands that mirror the Kremlin’s war goals, leaving no room for a fair agreement. She stressed that true peace can only come when Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully respected, a stance that Russia continues to reject.
