European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Kyiv on 24 February for a joint meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government. The visit comes as Ukraine marks three years since the start of Russia’s full scale invasion and is intended to reaffirm the European Union’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and future within the European community.
European Commission spokesman Stefan Kersmacker announced the visit at a briefing on Friday, stating that von der Leyen will be accompanied by the College of European Commissioners. This high level delegation will take part in discussions with Ukrainian officials on continued European support in military, economic and humanitarian sectors.
The meeting is expected to focus on Ukraine’s progress towards European Union membership, financial assistance, and measures to strengthen Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian aggression. The European Union has already provided billions of euros in aid to Ukraine and imposed multiple sanctions on Russia, but discussions will likely address the need for further measures.
