The Defence Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate (DIU) has responded to accusations from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who alleged that the Georgian National Legion was involved in organising protests in Slovakia. Fico suggested that the Legion, which he claimed was “subordinate” to the DIU, was involved in preparations for a coup d’état. The DIU categorically denied these claims, stating that no such unit as the “Georgian National Legion” exists within its structure.

In an official statement, the DIU emphasised that the Georgian National Legion is not part of Ukrainian military or intelligence operations, and the individual mentioned in the Slovak press conference is not a Ukrainian serviceman. The DIU clarified that this individual had no connection to Ukrainian intelligence or operations and had not received instructions from them.

The intelligence service expressed its concern over such accusations, particularly as they can fuel hybrid and information warfare that seeks to destabilise European nations and sow discord between partners. It stressed that European politicians must be responsible with their words, especially when accusing friendly nations, as false claims can serve as fodder for hostile propaganda, particularly from Russia.

Prime Minister Fico’s accusations came during a press conference on January 31, where he alleged the involvement of Mamuka Mamulashvili, the leader of the Georgian Legion, in recent public protests in Slovakia. Fico presented photographs to support his claims and made links to the Peace for Ukraine association, which he suggested had connections to the Georgian Legion. The DIU clarified that Mamulashvili’s contract with Ukraine’s International Legion of Defence expired in April 2013, and he had not been involved with Ukraine’s military or intelligence operations since then.

In light of these accusations, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has formally protested to the Slovak ambassador, condemning Fico’s statements as interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs. The Ministry urged Slovakia to refrain from echoing Kremlin rhetoric and return to constructive dialogue with Ukraine.
