New Ferry Route to Boost Bagamoyo’s Tourism and Economy


The Executive Director of Bagamoyo District Council, Shauri Selenda, announced the start of a new project to develop marine resources in the district. This project is managed by the Bagamoyo Network of Civil Society Organizations (Bangonet).

Project Overview:

The construction of a new pier at Bagamoyo Port will soon eliminate the need for residents of coastal areas and nearby regions to travel to Dar es Salaam to reach Zanzibar.

Selenda made this announcement on July 12, 2024, during the launch of the marine resource conservation and development project. The initiative is expected to provide modern ferries for both residents and tourists.

  • Government Involvement: The Ministry of Transport is currently assessing the project, including the environmental impact and the pier’s capacity. Though no official construction date has been set, it is expected to start soon.
  • Economic and Tourism Benefits: The new pier will open up tourism opportunities, allowing direct travel from Bagamoyo without the need to go to Dar es Salaam.
