The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has pledged its support to Tanzania in enhancing its digital transformation efforts. This partnership aims to strengthen the country’s digital capabilities across government and public sectors.
Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director for Information and Communication at Unesco, conveyed this commitment in a letter to Dr. Nkundwe Mwasaga, Director of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Dr. Mwasaga recently returned from a professional engagement in Paris, France, Unesco’s headquarters.
“Digital literacy is a cornerstone for success and sustainability in today’s world. We are pleased to support the Ministry of Information, Communications, and Technology of the United Republic of Tanzania and the TCRA in enhancing digital skills,” stated Jelassi.
He emphasized Unesco’s expertise framework for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital transformations as vital developmental tools, assisting member states in adapting to ongoing changes.
“In light of this, we propose that the TCRA and Unesco jointly conduct a needs assessment survey regarding digital skills within the government and broader public, followed by capacity-building initiatives to address identified skill gaps,” he added.
Beyond fundamental aspects like data management, privacy, cybersecurity, and AI, training for senior officials will prioritize strategic proficiency and a human-centered approach to public service structures.
Jelassi expressed confidence that the TCRA’s collaboration will contribute to positioning Tanzania as a global hub for innovation.
Dr. Mwasaga, discussing Tanzania’s readiness to accelerate its digital reforms, highlighted the enabling environment fostered by the collaboration between the TCRA and Unesco’s office in Dar es Salaam, under the leadership of Michel Toto, the organization’s local representative.
