The headquarters of Tesla in Saint Ouen, near Paris, was vandalised with white paint by unknown individuals on the night of Sunday, March 16. The incident, reported by Le Figaro, is the latest in a series of protests against the American electric car manufacturer and its owner, Elon Musk.
In February, the Climate Justice Action network targeted Tesla’s offices, spraying brown paint on windows and posting messages condemning Musk’s participation in an artificial intelligence summit in Paris. Activists criticised what they called the increasing control of billionaires over decisions that affect public life, particularly in relation to climate change and artificial intelligence.
Public opposition to Tesla and its owner is growing, not just in France but worldwide. Musk’s political activities, particularly his association with former US President Donald Trump, have sparked controversy. His public statements and policy positions have led to increasing criticism, particularly from those concerned about climate policy and corporate influence over governance.
Since the start of the year, Tesla’s stock has dropped by a third. The number of used Tesla vehicles being listed for sale has also surged in France. The company has been struggling in the European market, with sales in the region falling by 43.5% and by a staggering 70% in Germany. Experts suggest this decline is linked to Musk’s political involvement, particularly his engagement with Trump and his influence in Washington.
Musk’s growing political presence has raised concerns among investors. Reports indicate Tesla’s stock has been declining weekly since he became more involved in US politics. The controversy surrounding Musk’s leadership, coupled with increasing consumer dissatisfaction, has created uncertainty for Tesla’s future in Europe.
