Ukraine is taking a major step forward in modern warfare with the launch of the Drone Line project, an initiative that will integrate advanced drone technology with frontline infantry to enhance combat effectiveness. The project, announced by Minister of Defence Rustem Umerov, aims to establish a strike zone extending up to 15 kilometres, ensuring continuous air support for Ukrainian forces.
The initiative will be introduced in five elite military units: the 20th Separate Regiment “K-2,” the 429th Regiment “Achilles,” the 427th Regiment “RAROG,” the 414th Brigade “Birds of Magyar,” and the Phoenix Regiment, also known as the Revenge Brigade. These units have been selected due to their expertise in drone operations, which have already proven highly effective against Russian forces.

According to Umerov, the project will revolutionise Ukraine’s battlefield strategy by combining UAV capabilities with infantry operations. The integration of drones will create a 10 to 15 kilometre deep kill zone, where enemy movement will result in heavy losses. Constant air support will ensure that Ukrainian soldiers can detect and eliminate threats before they approach Ukrainian positions, significantly altering combat dynamics.
The Ukrainian defence industry has been working around the clock to develop and scale up drone technology. The Ministry of Defence has already initiated licensed production of modern FPV drones in collaboration with a private developer under a trilateral agreement. This effort ensures a steady supply of advanced UAVs to the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
Umerov expressed gratitude to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his leadership and support of the initiative. He also praised the defence industry for its relentless work in advancing unmanned aerial systems. He emphasised that the Drone Line project will provide Ukraine with a technological advantage, shifting the course of the war in favour of Ukrainian forces and intensifying the destruction of Russian troops.
