South Korean companies have introduced a new, cost-effective technology for laying asphalt, which has now been patented in the country in an exciting development for Ukraine’s reconstruction. This breakthrough technology promises to be more affordable and efficient, offering significant benefits for Ukraine’s damaged road infrastructure.
The announcement came from Serhii Sukhomlyn, the head of Ukraine’s State Agency for Restoration. He discussed the collaboration between Ukrainian officials and South Korean companies POSCO International Corporation and SG Company. POSCO, South Korea’s largest steelmaking company, expressed its interest in contributing to Ukraine’s recovery efforts as early as 2023.
The new asphalt laying technology, which has been successfully used in South Korea for over 10 years, promises a variety of advantages. It reduces noise and dust on the roads, causing minimal damage to the surface during the application process. This method replaces only the top layer of the road surface, using slag in place of crushed stone. As a result, the process is not only more environmentally friendly but also much cheaper than traditional methods.
According to Sukhomlyn, the Agency for Restoration is enthusiastic about the prospect of using this new technology. SG Company is currently conducting the necessary calculations and preparing to certify the technology. Once certification is complete, the companies plan to test the new method on a section of road in Ukraine, which is expected to take place in the spring of 2025.
This partnership between Ukraine and South Korea is set to play a pivotal role in the country’s recovery efforts, offering a faster and more cost-effective way to repair its road infrastructure. The adoption of this technology could help Ukraine save significant amounts of money while improving the quality of its roads.
