Lamu’s Gen Z Youth Express Views on Government Reform Efforts

Last Tuesday, young people from Generation Z in Lamu County continued with their daily activities amidst nationwide protests calling for reforms in various parts of the country.

In major towns like Lamu Old Town, Mokowe, Hindi, Mpeketoni, Kibaoni, Majembeni, Witu, Faza, Pate, Mkokoni, Kiwayu, and Kiunga on the Kenya-Somalia border, businesses operated as usual and transportation continued without disruption, seemingly unaffected by ongoing national demonstrations.

Contrary to other parts of the country where business and transport were disrupted, Lamu towns witnessed open shops and smooth traffic flow.

Some interviewed youth indicated they had participated in last week’s protests, affirming their frustration with the current administration under President William Ruto.

They mentioned that despite not joining this week’s protests, their stance remains consistent with their counterparts nationwide, advocating for sweeping reforms in the country.

Mohamed Omar, the youth leader in Lamu, expressed support for President Ruto’s resignation.

“Here in Lamu, we already marched for the first time last week. Even though we didn’t repeat the protests this week, we believe our voice was still heard. We support reforms in the country, including Zakayo (President Ruto) stepping down. We made our position clear last week during our participation in the protests. There’s no need to repeat ourselves,” said Mr. Omar.

Simon Mbuthia from Mpeketoni stated they would not participate in Tuesday’s protests as they planned to do so this Thursday.

“We have been notified to protest this Thursday. Therefore, we support our fellow youth across the country. President Ruto must step down from power,” Mr. Mbuthia emphasized.

Meanwhile, Brenda Mwangi urged the police not to use excessive force against demonstrators.
