On Tuesday, a large group of Gen Z youth from Lamu abruptly ended their protest when they discovered that Governor Issa Timamy was not in the office. The young people had planned to storm the Lamu County headquarters in Mokowe to demand changes from the governor.
The protesters had announced their intention to visit the county offices last week, aiming to see and “greet” Governor Timamy. Their main demand was for him to address several issues they believe are critical for the community.
Among their demands were the cancellation of funding for the annual Lamu Cultural Festival, which they feel diverts money from more essential development projects that benefit ordinary citizens. The youth also called for the reinstatement of a scholarship program for university students, the elimination of public funds used for overseas trips by county ministers, and other reforms.
In an interview with Taifa Leo on Tuesday, the protesters said they decided to pause their demonstration until Governor Timamy returns to his office. Mohamed Omar, one of the leaders of the Gen Z group, expressed frustration at the governor’s absence.
“We had hoped to meet the governor and discuss our demands. We had given a seven-day ultimatum, which expired today. We wanted to proceed with our protest, but since the governor is not here, we will reschedule our protest to Thursday, provided he is in the office,” said Omar.
Another protester emphasized that they would not back down until the national and county governments address their concerns. They stressed their desire for transparency and accountability in public service.
“We reject corruption, tribalism, and any form of wrongdoing in the government. We are fighting for proper use of public funds. We will continue to protest until our voices are heard,” said the youth.
An investigation by Taifa Leo revealed that Governor Timamy was among six coastal governors who traveled to Italy last week to seek funding and investment for the fishing and maritime sectors. Despite their return, Governor Timamy has yet to be seen or return to Lamu since the start of the week.
