Ukraine has launched a new women led drone unit named Harpia, with recruitment now open. The initiative was announced by the Command of the Unmanned Systems Forces and aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defence with highly trained drone operators. The unit welcomes men, but the critical role of piloting drones to deliver final strikes against Russian forces will be exclusively performed by women.
The unit is designed for those who seek justice against the invading forces and want to protect their families and country through the use of advanced unmanned and robotic systems. The commander of Harpia is Daria, known by her call sign “DShK.” She was an active participant in the Revolution of Dignity and has been carrying out combat operations with Ukrainian special forces since 2022.
New recruits joining Harpia will undergo rigorous training before being deployed. The preparation includes 45 days of UAV instruction, more than 30 days of specialised training, and team coordination exercises. Members will be trained to operate various drones, including FPV drones, heavy bomber drones, strike drones, and ground based robotic systems.
The unit offers competitive pay and full social benefits in line with Ukrainian legislation. Current servicewomen and reservists can apply to transfer or be mobilised into the Harpia unit. The Command of the Unmanned Systems Forces has assured that recruits will be placed in their chosen positions. Those interested can submit applications through the official website of the Unmanned Systems Forces.
Last month, Yurii, call sign Avis, the head recruiter for the 14th Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Regiment, shared insights on how candidates are selected for Ukraine’s growing high tech military units. He explained that applicants are assessed based on their skills and experience, with successful candidates offered positions matching their expertise. The formation of Harpia is part of a broader strategy to integrate more advanced technology and skilled personnel into Ukraine’s defence forces.
