Canada has announced a new package of military aid to Ukraine, valued at approximately $300 million, to support its ongoing defense efforts against Russian aggression.

Canada has pledged to provide a new military aid package to Ukraine, amounting to 440 million Canadian dollars (around $300 million USD). This contribution aims to strengthen the Ukrainian Armed Forces by providing essential supplies, including ammunition, drones, and winter gear. The announcement came after a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine’s defense in the Ramstein format on January 9, 2025.

Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair confirmed that part of the new aid would be allocated to the Czech initiative, which focuses on purchasing and delivering ammunition to Ukraine. This portion will total 200 million Canadian dollars, reflecting the ongoing need for shells, a key priority for Ukraine’s defense forces.

The Canadian government has also allocated another 50 million Canadian dollars to purchase additional ammunition from domestic manufacturers, further supporting Ukraine’s needs. Drones, which have become a critical tool in the conflict, will receive a significant boost from Canada as well. The government has committed 100 million Canadian dollars to a Danish model that supports the production of drones by Ukrainian defense industries. This investment in drones highlights their increasing importance on the battlefield, with Ukraine’s defense sector continuing to innovate and adapt.

Winter gear is another major focus of the aid package, with 30 million Canadian dollars dedicated to purchasing essential supplies such as sleeping bags, winter boots, and thermal protective layers. Several shipments of winter gear had already been delivered to Ukraine in December 2024, but this new allocation will help further equip the Ukrainian military for the harsh winter conditions.

This package is part of a larger commitment by Canada to provide Ukraine with continued military support. In 2024, Canada announced an additional $500 million in military assistance, part of the $1.6 billion military budget for the year. With this latest pledge, Canada’s total military support to Ukraine since the Russian invasion has reached $4.5 billion.

In addition to the new financial contributions, Canada has already provided Ukraine with drone cameras worth $50 million and winter uniforms worth approximately $23 million. Notably, in September 2024, Canada delivered over 2,000 engines for CRV-7 air defense missiles, and in December, it sent around 1,300 warheads for these missiles, further strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Canada’s continued commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense underscores its firm stance against Russian aggression and its role in the broader international effort to support Ukraine. The Canadian government has also expanded its ban on 324 firearms models and is considering transferring some of these firearms to Ukraine, a move that has already garnered interest from Kyiv in its efforts to combat Russian forces.
