(KYIV) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an extensive meeting focused primarily on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. According to Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the talks lasted nearly three hours, making it one of the lengthiest discussions in recent diplomatic history between the two nations. The meeting was later expanded to include additional ministers and delegation members from both countries.

The central theme of the conversation was the conflict initiated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Zelenskyy, known for his direct approach, reiterated Ukraine’s firm positions to the Indian delegation. Modi, in response, emphasized that India has consistently supported international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He made it clear that India stands firmly behind Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Yermak highlighted the significance of Modi’s stance, particularly his repeated affirmation that India would never back any initiative that involves compromising Ukraine’s territorial integrity. This position was reiterated multiple times during the meeting, underscoring India’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression.

The discussions also touched upon the progression of President Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula, a framework aimed at resolving the conflict and establishing lasting peace. Modi indicated that India had actively participated in various initiatives linked to this peace process, including the inaugural Peace Summit and meetings at the level of national security advisors. Modi assured that India would continue to be involved in these efforts and is eager to contribute to achieving a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine.

Furthermore, Modi conveyed a message of peace from the Global South, representing 120 countries. He stressed India’s respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, reiterating that Ukraine and Russia need to engage in dialogue to find a resolution to the ongoing crisis. Modi expressed India’s readiness to play an active role in all peace-seeking endeavors.

This meeting between Zelenskyy and Modi is seen as a crucial step in solidifying international support for Ukraine, particularly from a key global player like India. The firm stance taken by Modi during these talks sends a clear message about India’s position on the conflict and its commitment to upholding the principles of international law.
