Western ODM Leaders Vie for Wycliffe Oparanya’s Position
Leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in the Western region of Kenya are actively competing to succeed Wycliffe Oparanya, the former Kakamega Governor and now-designated Minister of Cooperative and Small Business Development.
Several ODM leaders from Kakamega and Vihiga counties have expressed interest in the position previously held by Oparanya, who was the party’s Deputy Chairman. Among the prominent candidates being considered are Fernandes Barasa, the current Kakamega Governor, and Godfrey Osotsi, the Senator for Vihiga.
On Friday, ODM delegates from Kakamega County endorsed Barasa as the new deputy party leader. This decision follows President William Ruto’s recent appointment of Oparanya to the ministerial role. Oparanya, along with Hassan Joho, the former Governor of Mombasa, previously held this position in the ODM party leadership.
However, Oparanya’s appointment to the cabinet faces challenges. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has raised concerns about alleged corruption activities involving Oparanya that require investigation.
ODM members from Kakamega, led by Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera, have argued that since the deputy leadership position was previously held by a representative from Kakamega, the role should remain within the county. They have emphasized the importance of maintaining the position within Kakamega to ensure continuity and representation.
