Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to prolong the war in Ukraine while waiting for a call from the President of the United States. Instead of seeking a peaceful resolution, the Kremlin refuses to agree to a ceasefire, hoping to manipulate international negotiations. Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, has stressed that it is not US President Donald Trump who should be demanding an end to hostilities but Putin himself.
According to Kovalenko, Putin is desperately seeking recognition from the White House, using media narratives to pressure Western leaders. Instead of admitting defeat and requesting a ceasefire, the Russian dictator continues his aggression, leading to further destruction in Ukraine. Kovalenko wrote that Russia’s arrogance must come at a cost and that the United States’ influence remains unquestionable in this matter.
The Ukrainian government has reported that Russian forces are preparing for new offensives in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. Intelligence suggests that the Kremlin is reinforcing its military reserves in an attempt to escalate the conflict. This renewed aggression demonstrates that Russia has no interest in peace and remains committed to its expansionist ambitions.
Western analysts point out that Putin’s refusal to negotiate is part of a broader strategy to exhaust Ukraine and its allies. By dragging out the conflict, Moscow hopes to weaken international support for Ukraine and force a settlement on its own terms. However, Kyiv has repeatedly made it clear that any negotiations must begin with Russia withdrawing its troops and taking full responsibility for the invasion.
Putin’s strategy relies on waiting for changes in Western leadership that could lead to a more favourable stance toward Moscow. Some Russian state media outlets have portrayed Trump’s possible return to the White House as an opportunity to pressure Ukraine into making concessions. However, Ukrainian officials reject this notion, emphasising that their country’s sovereignty is non negotiable.
The Ukrainian military remains on high alert, preparing for potential Russian offensives in the coming months. The conflict has already led to immense destruction, with thousands of civilians killed and millions displaced. Kyiv continues to rely on its allies for military and financial support, ensuring that it can defend itself against continued Russian aggression.
Despite Russia’s efforts to manipulate international politics, the global community largely recognises that Moscow is responsible for prolonging the war. Putin’s refusal to negotiate in good faith has only strengthened Ukraine’s resolve to resist. While the Kremlin waits for a phone call from Washington, Ukraine continues to fight for its freedom and independence.
