The German government has expressed scepticism over the possibility of a quick agreement on a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, stating that Russia has shown little willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations. German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said in Berlin that reaching an agreement would take time, indicating that Moscow remains uncooperative.
The issue of Ukraine will be a central topic at the upcoming European Union summit on Thursday and Friday. European leaders are expected to discuss military and financial support for Ukraine, as well as the broader security implications of the ongoing war. Despite diplomatic efforts, Russia has so far shown reluctance to engage in ceasefire talks that could lead to genuine de-escalation.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has criticised Russia’s position, stating that Moscow’s demands demonstrate a lack of real interest in peace. She noted that any ceasefire agreement proposed by Russia would likely come with conditions aimed at freezing the conflict on the Kremlin’s terms rather than reaching a fair resolution.
Germany, along with other EU nations, has reinforced its military and financial aid commitments, ensuring that Ukraine has the necessary resources to continue resisting Russian occupation.
