Over 2,000 Dogs Vaccinated Against Rabies in Kabale Region

In a recent vaccination drive across the districts of Kabale, Rubanda, and Rukiga, more than 2,000 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies. This initiative is part of a broader effort to curb the spread of rabies, a disease primarily transmitted to humans through infected dogs.

The vaccination campaign, which is funded by the Mission Rabies project and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF), aimed to vaccinate a total of 2,500 dogs. The project has made significant progress, with the goal expected to be reached by the end of the exercise on Saturday.

Dr. Frederic Lohor, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Mission Rabies, highlighted the selection of these districts due to their high risk of rabies. These areas are near international borders and national parks, which increases the likelihood of rabies exposure. Dr. Lohor noted that about 2,000 dogs have already been vaccinated, with efforts continuing to meet the target.

Dr. Angella Anyongire, Kabale District Veterinary Officer, pointed out that although some dog owners did not participate in the campaign, the vaccination is essential in reducing rabies risks. The district records between 8 and 20 dog bite cases per month and has reported five rabies cases since July of the previous year. Dr. Anyongire urged all dog owners to engage in vaccination programs to help diminish the risk of rabies.

Dr. Flavia Nakanjako, Rabies Focal Person and Senior Veterinary Officer at MAAIF, underscored the significance of the vaccination drive. She explained that 60 percent of districts in Uganda have reported rabies cases, particularly those near national parks. The comprehensive strategy against rabies includes mass vaccination of animals, vaccination of veterinary and public health professionals, raising public awareness, and improving rabies surveillance.
