Graduates Urged to Seize Development Opportunities
Young graduates from vocational training programs in Zanzibar are calling on the government to prioritize them in development projects. This request was made during the 10th graduation ceremony of the Vocational Training Institute (VTA) Mwanakwerekwe on August 14, 2024.
A total of 215 graduates received certificates in various fields including tailoring, electrical work, information and communication technology (ICT), carpentry, and electronics. The graduates are seeking to demonstrate their skills and contribute to development projects, as well as address the issue of unemployment.
Asma Masoud Habibu, speaking on behalf of her fellow graduates, expressed their desire for increased opportunities. “We have developed skills in various trades and are ready to compete in the job market. We hope that the government will prioritize vocational graduates in development projects to inspire more young people to pursue such training,” Habibu said.
She noted that the graduating class consisted of 165 individuals at the start, including 85 women and 80 men. However, only 138 completed the program due to various challenges, including marriage and relocation.
Dr. Bakari Ali Silima, the Executive Director of VTA, emphasized the potential of well-prepared young people to be a significant asset to the nation. He acknowledged the challenges faced in delivering practical training, noting the need for timely provision of resources. “Vocational training relies heavily on practical experience, and without timely access to materials, it becomes a significant problem,” Dr. Silima said.
The institute plans to reach out to more young people to encourage their participation in vocational training. They aim to enroll 1,550 students in the five vocational training centers across Zanzibar next year, with an additional 2,000 students for short-term courses.
The Zanzibar government has already begun integrating vocational training into secondary education, making it accessible regardless of student preference.
Mgeni Hassan Juma, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and the guest of honor, highlighted the importance of vocational training in national development. He noted that effective training contributes to strong infrastructure and improved social services.
However, Juma also pointed out the lack of an efficient system for accessing skilled tradespeople and stressed the need for cooperative groups to address this issue. “There are many opportunities, but it requires dedication and readiness to seize these opportunities,” he said.
Juma encouraged the graduates to prepare thoroughly and use any funds received wisely to ensure success. “Without proper planning, it is challenging to succeed. The government has recognized the need to provide funding, but it’s up to you to make the most of it,” he advised.
