The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China is currently investigating the capture of two Chinese citizens in Ukraine, who were reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces in the ongoing war. The incident, which occurred in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, has raised concerns within Beijing, leading to an official review of the situation.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian troops had captured two Chinese nationals who were fighting for Russia. Following this, the Chinese government stated that it is verifying the information. Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterated Beijing’s position that Chinese citizens are strongly advised to avoid involvement in any armed conflicts, especially in foreign military operations.
Zelenskyy’s statements regarding the involvement of additional Chinese citizens aiding Russia were dismissed by Beijing, with Lin Jian calling the accusations “unfounded.” The Chinese government also reiterated its stance on the Ukrainian crisis, emphasising that China’s position is clear and recognised internationally. China has consistently advocated for a political resolution to the conflict and claims to play a constructive role in efforts towards peace.
In response to the capture, Ukraine has summoned China’s temporary representative in Kyiv. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern that the involvement of Chinese nationals in the war on the Russian side undermines the credibility of Beijing’s stance on peace. This development has raised alarm in Washington, where a spokesperson from the US State Department commented on the situation, calling it “alarming.”
Intelligence and security services in Ukraine, including the SBU and relevant military units, are currently working with the two captured Chinese citizens. The Ukrainian government views this as a significant development, which may have broader implications for efforts for peace.
