U.S. Citizen Arrested in Moscow for Allegedly Assaulting Police Officer

A U.S. citizen named Joseph Tater has been arrested in Moscow for allegedly assaulting a police officer, according to state media reports from Thursday. The incident occurred on Monday night when Tater attempted to check into a hotel without presenting a Russian migration card, a document required for foreign visitors upon entering Russia.

Authorities reported that Tater initially refused to provide his identity documents. According to the Investigative Committee, he then used physical force against a police officer. The officer was reportedly hit on the forearm and pushed by Tater.

As a result of the altercation, Tater faces charges of assaulting a police officer. If convicted, this offense could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years. In addition to the assault charges, Tater was also placed in pre-trial detention by a Moscow court on administrative charges of hooliganism.

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has acknowledged awareness of Tater’s arrest but has declined to provide further comments on the matter.
