Herbalist Sought in Deaths of Two Stepchildren
(Kasese, Uganda) – Detectives at Rwenzori East Regional Police are searching for a herbalist named Dr. Hajji Abdul Kasiita in connection with the deaths of two young girls who reportedly died after drinking poisoned soda. The incident occurred on the evening of August 8, 2024, in Kogere cell, Nyamwamba Division, Kasese Municipality.
According to SP Luka Mbusa, the acting spokesperson for Rwenzori East Regional Police, the deceased children were Catherine Kabugho, aged 10, and Caroline Mbambu, aged 8. They were the daughters of Mary Murungi, a police officer stationed at Masika Police. The girls were living at Kasiita’s residence.
The children were taken to Mount St. Mary’s Hospital in Kasese Municipality, where they were pronounced dead. “We found two empty soda bottles with a smell of rat poison. An investigation has been launched, and Kasiita is being sought in connection with the deaths of his stepchildren,” Mbusa said.
George Baluku, a neighbor of Kasiita, reported that on Thursday, he visited the accused’s home and asked the girls why they had not gone to school. The girls told him they were suffering from severe stomach pains after consuming chapatis and sodas purchased by Kasiita.
As of now, the postmortem report has not been released. The police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
