The Uganda Police Force has issued a statement addressing confusion regarding the theft of a vehicle linked to the security detail of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba. According to Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, the official vehicle of the IGP remains secure and was not involved in the reported theft.
Kituuma clarified that the vehicle in question is not the IGP’s official car but rather a police single cabin pickup truck, registered as UP 00135. This vehicle, used as a service van, was stolen from Kireka Police Barracks in Wakiso District on August 7, 2024.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as Sergeant Vuni, had parked and locked the truck before returning to his quarters on the night of August 6. The following morning, Vuni discovered the vehicle missing and promptly reported the theft to the Police’s Counter Terrorism Directorate, which is tasked with the IGP’s security. He also filed an official report at Jinja Road Police Station.
Following the report, the Police launched an investigation which led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and the arrest of a suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as necessary.
Kituuma emphasized that the confusion arose from inaccurate media reports. “The information suggesting that the IGP’s official vehicle was stolen is incorrect. We assure the public that the IGP’s vehicle remains secure and has not been compromised,” Kituuma said in the statement.
