The government has introduced a strategic plan to provide larger fishing boats to local communities In an effort to combat illegal fishing practices, particularly those involving small nets. This initiative aims to address the escalating issue of illegal fishing in the Chwaka Bay area, situated in the southern part of Unguja.
On July 26, 2024, Shaaban Ali Othman, the Minister for Blue Economy and Fisheries, announced the plan during a meeting with various stakeholders, including regional security and defense committees, local residents, and fishermen. The discussion was focused on addressing the challenges faced by fishermen and finding viable solutions.
The new plan involves the construction of large fishing boats, each measuring eight meters in length, which will enable fishermen to reach deeper waters. This move is intended to help preserve the designated conservation areas and increase fish production in the Chwaka Bay region.
In addition to providing the boats, the government will oversee the distribution of legally approved fishing nets, ensuring that all equipment used complies with established regulations.
Minister Othman expressed the ministry’s readiness to consider additional suggestions from the fishing community to refine and improve the plan.
Ayoub Mohammed Mahamoud, the Regional Commissioner for Southern Unguja, highlighted the dangers associated with conflicts between fishermen and conservation area managers. He emphasized the need for fishermen to embrace the government’s proposals to achieve a swift resolution.
Some fishermen have expressed their support for the new plan, noting that improved equipment would help them move away from illegal fishing practices. Many reported that their main challenge is the lack of suitable tools to reach deeper waters.
The fishermen welcomed the government’s proposals and urged the Ministry of Blue Economy to continue conducting thorough research on the use of marine resources in the Chwaka Bay area.
Haji Suleiman Issa, a local fisherman, acknowledged the difficulties faced due to inadequate equipment and the consequent reliance on nearby protected areas. He praised the government’s plan as a positive step that would assist in improving their fishing practices and income.
