Ukrainian defence forces have confirmed a successful strike on the deployment site of Russia’s 448th missile brigade in the Kursk region. This unit was directly involved in the recent missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, which killed 32 people and injured 84 others, including children, during Palm Sunday.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that several military branches collaborated in the operation, including Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, and the Security Service of Ukraine. They launched an attack targeting multiple facilities in Russia’s Kursk region connected to the missile strike on Sumy and other war crimes. Among the key targets was the permanent base of the 448th missile brigade. A secondary detonation of stored ammunition was also reported, with damage assessments still underway.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, identified the 112th and 448th missile brigades as responsible for launching Iskander-M ballistic missiles from Voronezh and Kursk regions into Sumy. These Russian missile brigades used the settlements of Liski and Lezhenki as their launch points, underlining Russia’s continued use of its territory to target Ukrainian civilians.
Budanov stressed that every individual involved in attacking Ukrainian cities will be held accountable. Ukrainian forces have vowed to continue precision strikes against those carrying out such attacks until the Kremlin’s aggression is fully repelled.
The Palm Sunday missile strike caused significant casualties and destruction in the centre of Sumy.
The Ukrainian government labelled the missile strike as a deliberate war crime and has intensified its efforts to target those involved. Ukrainian defence sources have also confirmed a separate drone attack in Kursk that struck a Russian ammunition depot as part of a wider campaign aimed at dismantling the infrastructure enabling Russia’s continued aggression.
