A Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officer has been sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison for the rape and intimidation of two girls in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The crimes, committed during the Russian occupation in April-May 2022, involved weapons and threats, underscoring the brutality of Kremlin forces against civilians.

The verdict was delivered by a Ukrainian court after the 24-year-old Russian lieutenant was found guilty of violating the laws and customs of war under part 1 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code. The Office of the Prosecutor General confirmed the sentencing, highlighting yet another example of Russian war crimes on occupied Ukrainian territory.

The first attack took place in April 2022 when the officer invaded a private home where civilians were sheltering. He singled out one of the victims, a minor, and threatened her with a firearm before forcibly taking her from the house and raping her. The second assault occurred between April and May 2022 when the same officer targeted another woman. Under the pretext of interrogating her about possible cooperation with the Ukrainian Armed Forces, he lured her away from her home, fired a gun near her head, and then raped her while continuing to threaten her with his weapon.

This case is part of a broader pattern of war crimes committed by Russian forces in occupied Ukrainian territories. Ukrainian law enforcement agencies continue to investigate and prosecute those responsible, ensuring that perpetrators face justice, even if in absentia.
