Vladimir Putin requires the war in Ukraine to maintain his grip on power, making any peace proposals from figures like Donald Trump ultimately meaningless “nonsense”, according to prominent anti Kremlin campaigner Sir Bill Browder. Speaking to Front Line, the British financier and head of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign warned that Putin’s motivations stem from decades of corruption and fear of his own people, not from any genuine geopolitical grievance or desire for a negotiated settlement. Browder dismissed recent assertions by Trump blaming President Zelensky for the conflict, stating unequivocally that Putin initiated the war purely to secure his continued rule after, Browder estimates, he and his inner circle stole approximately $1 trillion (around £800 billion) from the Russian state over 25 years. Facing potential public backlash, Putin manufactured a foreign conflict to distract the population and consolidate his dictatorship. Consequently, Browder argues, offers of territorial concessions or agreements on NATO membership, as suggested by Trump, are irrelevant to Putin’s calculus; the Russian leader needs the perpetual conflict itself.
Browder highlighted the staggering cost of the war for Russia, suggesting Putin’s unaccountable leadership allows him to absorb losses that would topple any democratic government. These losses, based on Ukrainian estimates cited by Browder, paint a grim picture for Moscow:
