Russia is deploying extreme measures to protect its illegally constructed Kerch Bridge, with Ukrainian forces maintaining their firm resolve to destroy this critical infrastructure. The strategic bridge, which connects the Russian mainland to Crimea, remains one of the top targets for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Dmitry Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, stated that until Russia takes the unprecedented step of positioning an armoured train on the railway tracks, it cannot be said that they have fully safeguarded the bridge.
Russia, it seems, is pulling out all the stops in its attempts to defend the bridge, which is central to its military logistics and supply routes. The occupiers have significantly tightened security measures around the area, regularly blocking traffic in both directions and carrying out thorough document checks on those attempting to cross. Pletenchuk sarcastically noted that the authorities even enforce stricter checks than when crossing state borders, much to the frustration of “illegal Russian tourists” heading to Crimea.
To bolster the security of the bridge, Russia has deployed two air defence brigades and created a powerful multi-layered defence system, both above and below the waterline. The system has been designed to protect the structure from potential sabotage or aerial attacks. Despite these efforts, the bridge’s vulnerability continues to be apparent, with reports suggesting that Russia’s defences have been compromised. The Crimean Wind monitoring group revealed that during the harsh winter storms, Russia had lost nearly half of its barriers positioned near the Kerch Bridge, a blow to its already strained defences.
Military experts point out that the bridge holds immense strategic significance for Russia, both for its logistical importance and as a symbol of their illegal annexation of Crimea. As Ukraine continues its military push, Russia’s heightened security measures are a sign of its growing concern over the fate of the bridge. However, with the relentless determination of Ukrainian forces, the bridge’s days may well be numbered.
