(Kyiv) – President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Ukraine’s international partners to grant the country licenses to produce its own air defense systems and missiles, emphasizing that such a move would enhance the nation’s defense capabilities.
During discussions with various partners, including the United States, Zelensky made it clear that the possibility of Ukraine manufacturing these critical systems was not out of reach. He stressed the importance of fulfilling previous agreements related to air defense, which have yet to be fully realized.
Zelensky pointed out that the ability to manufacture its own air defense and missile systems would not only bolster Ukraine’s security but also strengthen the overall efforts of its allies in ensuring long-term peace. He highlighted the significance of this capability as a vital step toward achieving lasting stability in the region.
This week, the Russian military launched a series of devastating attacks on Ukraine, with nearly 700 air bombs and over 600 strike drones hitting Ukrainian cities, villages, and military positions. These ongoing strikes underscore the continued threat posed by Russia, which has relied on its superiority in the air to maintain its aggression. Zelensky noted that these attacks demonstrate the urgent need for enhanced defense capabilities to counter Russian aggression.
In addition to discussions on production licenses, Ukraine has been exploring other avenues for strengthening its air defense. For example, there have been talks with Italy regarding the use of proceeds from frozen Russian assets to purchase air defense systems. Moreover, Zelensky has engaged with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense infrastructure and the acquisition of more weapons.
Despite these efforts, Zelensky expressed concern that key decisions made at the NATO summit in Washington, as well as agreements made during Ramstein meetings, have yet to be fully implemented. He emphasized that the inability of partners to follow through on these commitments has left Ukraine vulnerable to continued attacks.
Zelensky’s remarks underline the importance of securing reliable and robust air defense systems, as well as the need for international support to ensure Ukraine’s continued resilience in the face of Russian aggression. The president concluded by stating that while Russia may not stop its war willingly, it can only be forced to peace through a sufficient and effective defense system, especially in the air.
