A fuel and energy complex in Russia’s Astrakhan region was targeted in a drone attack overnight on 17 March, resulting in a fire and one reported injury. Russian authorities claim to have intercepted 22 drones across various regions but confirmed that the attack caused damage to infrastructure.
The governor of the Astrakhan region, Igor Babushkin, described the incident as a “massive drone attack” on facilities within the region, including the fuel and energy complex. He stated that work shifts had been evacuated in advance and that electronic warfare and air defence systems were active. Despite these efforts, fragments from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) ignited a fire at the site. Babushkin assured the public that the situation was under control.
The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that its air defence forces destroyed 22 drones overnight. This included 13 drones intercepted over the Astrakhan region, 3 over Kalmykia, 2 over Bryansk, 2 over the Krasnodar Territory, and 1 each over Volgograd and Rostov regions.

The head of Ukraine’s Centre for Counteracting Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko, noted that “the intensity of drone activity is increasing,” suggesting growing pressure on Russia’s energy infrastructure. Petro Andryushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, indicated that the attack targeted the Astrakhan Gas Processing Plant in Aksaraisky.
Although Russia claims to have intercepted most of the drones, the attack demonstrates vulnerabilities in its air defence system. The fire at a critical energy facility underscores ongoing risks to Russian infrastructure. Moscow has frequently used drone strikes to target Ukrainian cities, and now similar attacks are reaching deep into Russian territory.
