In his evening address on January 17, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided a stark message about Europe’s energy future. Following the end of the Russian gas transit agreement, Zelensky stated that the path forward for Europe is clear: only through its own work toward energy independence can the continent secure its future.
Zelensky’s comments came during a visit by a Slovakian parliamentary delegation led by opposition leader Michal Šimečka. The discussions centred around Ukraine’s energy sector, with Zelensky emphasising that the nation is prepared to engage in open and honest collaboration with Slovakia and other European partners. “We are ready for transparent cooperation with Slovakia—just as we are with all our partners—on energy security and more affordable energy prices,” Zelensky said, addressing the concerns raised by certain detractors who spread misinformation about Ukraine’s energy strategy.
He made it clear that Europe’s energy security no longer relies on Russian transit, with the end of the gas deal marking a turning point. “The reality is simple: Europe must work towards energy independence and rely on its partners,” he added. Zelensky stressed that it was important for Europe to focus on working for its people, rather than for Moscow’s interests.
In his address, Zelensky also mentioned the significant impact of President Trump’s new energy policies, which promise to increase global energy supply. This shift is expected to help ensure more stability and availability of energy resources worldwide, further complementing Europe’s drive for energy independence.
In addition to the energy talks, Zelensky met with leaders from Southeast European countries and discussed mutual support, security, and economic relations within the frameworks of the EU and NATO. He underlined the common threat of Russian destabilisation, emphasising that collective security remains essential in protecting Europe from Russian aggression.
Zelensky also took a moment to honour Ukraine’s military heroes. He awarded the Gold Star of Hero of Ukraine to the mother of Senior Soldier Dmytro Maslovskyi (call sign “Kobra”), who was killed in action while defending Ukraine’s sovereignty. Maslovskyi had fought bravely during the full-scale Russian invasion, and his heroism was recognised by the President in a ceremony held earlier that day.
