Drones attacked the Taneko oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, which is critical in supplying fuel to Russia’s military efforts, damaging the primary processing unit.

In a significant strike on Russian military infrastructure, drones targeted the Taneko oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, located in the Tatarstan region of Russia. The refinery, one of the largest and most advanced in Russia, is a key supplier of fuel for the Russian army, with a refining capacity of over 16 million tons of oil annually.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, confirmed the attack, stating that Taneko had been struck multiple times before. He emphasized that knocking out such facilities directly impacts Russia’s ability to wage war effectively by disrupting fuel supply lines. “This refinery is crucial for fueling the Russian military,” Kovalenko said, highlighting that disruptions to the refinery’s operations significantly hinder Russia’s military logistics.

The refinery was hit earlier this year as well, with a spring 2024 attack damaging its primary processing unit. Such strikes against critical infrastructure are part of a broader effort to challenge Russia’s war capabilities by targeting its energy sector.

In addition to the attacks, the local area was put on high alert. Following the drone threat, workers at the refinery were evacuated. According to reports, there were visible signs of smoke rising from the plant, further indicating the extent of the damage. Local authorities also enacted a special emergency response plan, known as the “Carpet Plan,” at Nizhnekamsk Airport to deal with the UAV threat.

While the damage to the refinery has not been fully assessed, the repeated attacks serve as a clear message: disrupting Russia’s energy infrastructure remains a key strategy in limiting its military ambitions. The incident underscores the increasingly prominent role of drones in modern warfare, particularly in undermining key resources that sustain military operations.
